TooManyTabs Advanced Configuration & Setting

Backup & Restore TooManyTabs

All the tabs of TooManyTabs are stored in a bookmark folder called "TooManyTabs (Do Not Delete)". To view the folder, go to "Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks". You can use the backup & restore tools provide by Firefox to backup & restore tabs in TooManyTabs. Note there is no way to backup or restore an individual folder using this tool.

Micro manage TMT rows

Normally the manage tab in TMT options is sufficient, but if prefer more micro management. You can set the preference "extensions.TooManyTabs@visibotech.com.tmtFolderReadonly" to "false", then you can manage (delete/order) your TMT rows in your bookmarks Library. Please set the preference back to "true" after you finish the management.

Can I rename of the root directory "TooManyTabs (Do Not Delete)" of TooManyTabs?

Yes. You can go to "Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks" and rename the "TooManyTabs (Do Not Delete)" Folder to another name. The changes would be reflected in the add-on immediately (i.e. There is no need to restart Firefox). Under most situations, this is unnecessary.

How to change the maximum size of tabs in TooManyTabs?

To decrease the size of tabs in TooManyTabs, in your url bar, type "about:config" then enter "toomanytabs" to filter the preferences. Change the preference "extensions.TooManyTabs@visibotech.com.maxTabWidth" to any value under 250. **The add-on will ignore any size larger than 250.

How to clear all data if you uninstall TooManyTabs?
  • After uninstall TMT using the addon manager, restart Firefox
  • TMT data is stored in the Library > "Unsorted Bookmarks" > "TooManyTabs (Do Not Delete)" folder. Please do not remove this folder in case you are just performing a downgrade.
  • To clear all data , just remove the TMT folder. You might also want to backup before you delete the folder (Use backup & save to a file).
  • Go to about:config, search for toomanytabs, then reset all preference that has been modified.
Micromanage your TMT tabs & Row
  • Go to about:config, search for this preference "extensions.TooManyTabs@visibotech.com.tmtFolderReadonly", set the value to false
  • Go to Unsorted Bookmarks > TooManyTabs (Do not delete).
  • To manage your rows, you can order the rows (folders), delete or rename a row directly, the changes are reflected immediately on TMT.
  • For managing TMT tabs, you can drag and drop TMT tab (a bookmark) between rows, delete or rename them. You can also use bookmark addons like SortPlaces that sorts your bookmarks in different ways.
  • For searching, searching TMT tabs is like searching bookmarks. However, unless you open the tab via TMT, the sessions and tabs state cannot be restored by directly clicking on the bookmarks.

I love your too many tabs add-on. But It would be even better if you could add a search feature to your TooManyTabs add-on, as I have a lot of TooManyTabs and it is a pain to go thorough all of them to find the tab I need at any given point in time.

Thanks
PJ

Is it possible to create a auto backup of my tabs

Thanks

Hi, Firefox has automatically backup (up to a few days) all your bookmarks, please check the Library. Since TMT makes use the bookmark system to store its tab data, you can say the TMT data are already backup automatically. Hope it helps.

Is there any way to copy / transfer my suspended tabs from TMT Firefox to TMT Chrome?
Thanks for your great work.
Rick

Sandy@visibo said...

@Richard: there is no direct way to do it now since TMT for chrome does not use bookmarks as storage. However, you might try tools like XMarks to synchronize your bookmarks, then you can access them on Chrome as well. (though not within TMT for chrome)

Hi, I installed TooManyTabs last week, it was the answer to my prayers or so I thought. However, I haven't used the laptop for 2 days and now there is nothing at all showing so that I can add to what is there. If I go into Addons/Options on TooManyTabs, I can choose more rows etc and the folder TooManyTabs (Do Not Delete) is in my Bookmarks but there are no TMT icons whatsoever. How do I get the icons back?

Sandy@visibo said...

@NolafromNZ: May be TMT is hidden? Please try click 'Tools > Toggle TMT'. Hope it helps.

Would be cool to set datafile location! TMT-addict :)

I am getting tabs from hperpromote that are attached to your extension. Is this built in or has this been hacked?

Is this extension ad supported via advertisement tabs opening?

Sandy@visibo said...

@Rich No. Only when TMT is updated, a tab will open this blog to explain details of the update. If you downloaded TMT from here (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/9429), then it should be safe from any hacking.

There are many reasons if you see suspicious sites/tabs popuping up, for example, some other websites/extensions are opening the popup, or your browser has been compromised. Hope it helps.

One of the best add-ons around!
But how do I keep all TMT tab rows visible all the time?

How can I copy my TMT tabs from Firefox to Chrome? I'm not at all sure what format TMT Chrome is expecting in the import box.

I cannot agree more with Niteprince's suggestion; namely that of integrating a search feature to your otherwise excellent - one of my alltime favorites- extension. (and i would add : an intelligent/innovative search interface would really make that thing fly !... maybe a coverflow, tree, or diagrammatic view - with, say, the ability to preview a selected TMT'd page through any kind of convenient mechanism - again cover flow.. or flow chart, or even overlayed popup window - something like the interfaces coolpreviews and cooliris use? or that other extension that didnt really take off.. i think History Tree was what they called it... all this of course would mean an added interface one would access to go back through time... immemorial! (I've been a happy user and abuser of your incredibly practical addon for many years now, and being a researcher, i have quite a scary (or impressive - depending on your politics ;)) number of rows each holding yet another improbable # of tabs. And I have, till now not found a way to become a little bit more efficient at managing/grouping (there goes another suggestion : in lieu of the search option (or in addition to it.. or even with/in it!) at least some way to cluster/group a number of rows by giving them a name for example.. or/and adding a visual cue (like a dotted line in the list of the "manage rows" tab of the preference pane - this also could benefit gratly from little improvements; like, from the top of my head (and the bottom of my heart ;)) a better way to rearrange the order of - or even sort - the rows. right now to get a row from the bottom of the list up to the top takes more time than opening the topmost row's tabs in a browser window, adding the other ones in their place, then recreating a row to finally append the former tabs to it.. this is because the list does not scroll up with you as you drag rows up or down it. at least not on a Mac... dunno about Windows users experience.. I probably did not close all the parenth's in my post (sorry about my labyrinthine way of writing with all the [(, -, ...]) but i'm not writing Lisp code so i guess that"s ok ;)

Finally, a huge thank you for coming up with that idea, i have been a user since very early on the line, and think for all those like me (not necessarily in research) who have used your tool properly and understood it's power/capacity (especially associated with X-marks. cheers for that option by the way too. Brilliant.), it's a great time to address these issues of managing/browsing back/exploring the wealth of all the harnessed tabs over the last years- having by today, i'm sure, collected quite a wealth of rows of tabs. Time for TooManyRows! hehehe...

Sin Sincerely,
The Metaphysical Crook.

Firefox crashed and when it restarted all my tabs were lost. Don't count on this to remember your web sites for you, only a convenience while the browser is running.

Sandy@visibo said...

@JTGD: TMT does not restore your session when Firefox crashes. It only remembers those tabs you have sent to TMT toolbars. Hope it helps.

Hi,
is it possible to set TMT, so it doesn't send permanent tabs (ff4) to a row when i select "send all tabs into row" (or sth like that, I'm using translated version)

I had the same problem with restoring a file. The icons for the individual tabs change to a star. It looks like maybe the icons didn't get into the file?

Great Program

Thanks

Hi, I like this Too Many Tabs. So I am using it for my routine business. But when my Firefox crushed, it lost all the tabs. Fortunately Too Many Tabs (Do not delete) in my bookmark stores all the data. How can I restore them and sync them in Too Many Tabs in Firefox with the data in the bookmark because it since then has not linked each other.
Thanks Heath

@Heath: do you mean you see your tabs in "TooManyTabs (Do not delete)" folder but do not see them in the TMT rows? Please email us for more support.

Hi i have just got to say this is a great great app my favorite.

You can only see about 9 or 10 tabs per row in the browser, before you have to scroll left or right, to see the rest...THE TABS ARE TOO BIG... And you cant make them smaller i have tried everything even you post on here that say...........................
......

I have done this and nothing happens, still all the same size please please, can someone one reply to this post and tell me one if they have managed to get the tabs smaller so you can display far more in the browser or if there is a way to do this that that works. thank you so much

oh yes can you remove the big yellow pin that shows up on the tab when you pin them, its to big and ugly and when you have loads pinned they stand out like great yellow beacons
right across your screen. It would be great if there was a way you could pin your tabs but hide the big yellow pins. What do you think i love this app so much thank you

Since updating to Firefox 5, the tab rows appear below all the other toolbars rather than just below your normal FF tabs. I can't figure out how to move the tabs back to the top above the address bar. It looks much more cluttered, perhaps enough for me to uninstall even though I love this add-on!

I would like it if the size of the tabs in TMT would fit the content. I hate having a tab wasting valuable space in the TMT bar.

Hi,
First of all nice work done. I want to know if tmt can automatically put the tabs in the rows as the no of tabs increase. Also when I select any tab from the tmt row, it loads it in the main tab list and reloads the page. Can this behaviour be changed so the tabs can be accessed from the tmt rows itself ?

Thanks ...

Hello,
It is remarkable how quickly I came to rely on TMT (Firefox). Something weird has happened that I can't put my finger on, or find clues to in the various forums I've searched. I had 60+ Tabs moved into Row 1 of TMT. They appeared normally for weeks. Two days ago All but 5 of them disappeared and are no longer stored in the TooManyTabs (Do Not Delete) folder. This is a bummer in and of itself but then, today, it's a different set of 5 tabs. Is there a cache somewhere if the 60+ URL's that TMT is somehow picking a random 5 from? Again, only 5 are in the bookmarks folder but that 5 changed from one group to a completely different set picked from the original 60+ over night.

Visibo Team said...

@reeper Do you have any bookmarks synchronization tool running? It may have moved your tabs in TMT. I would suggest you to backup the current bookmarks to a file first (using FF Library), then load the back up from few days ago from FF automatic bookmarks backup (also in the Library). Hope it helps.

Hi I'm Joe and I'm a Tab-aholic... I love this extension. The only question/gripe I have is that when I click on a TMT-tab it disappears from the TMT-bar, and thus possibly out of my bookmark collection. Is there a way to force them to stay put, even upon re-opening from TMT bar? I can still maintain(remove) them in as Bookmarks, of course. Please advise. Thanks, and keep churning out those great productivity tools!

Visibo Team said...

Hi, please right click on the TMT tab and click "pin tab". Hope it helps.

Nice extension. Much better than FF's native "Tab Grouping" which I tried once and that was too much of a pain (for me). Just a thought -- could you make the status bar button On instead of Off by default in future. I like to use Hide TMT TB After X Seconds and when it hid itself it took me a while to find how to get it back -derp- (status bar button). Chrome's TMT is nice and slick too. Thanks.

I originally was using TMT only over on Chrome. On Opera I was using Tab Vault which was my favorite before I abandoned Opera because of instability.

Both Chrome and Opera feature easy import/export set ups for tab files. So when I hooked up TMT for Firefox I thought I would have the same easy option to export my saved tabs as I then upload them to Dropbox so I can organize and use them at my leisure.

However, the system with Firefox is way to confusing...what's with the "j.son" file ending? I exported a back up and now it won't open because Windows doesn't recognized the file ending. I tried saving the file as an "all files" type but TMT doesn't let it.

I can't rely on Firefox to save the tabs because Firefox crashes are frequent and stuff gets lost.

Why can't we simply export a regular file to our computer when using TMT with Firefox?

Visibo Team said...

@SimplyStated The backup file from TMT is for export and import between Firefox profiles and from Firefox's to Chrome's TMT. If you would like to backup a readable file, please use Firefox bookmarks backup tool. It will export all your bookmarks including TMT tabs in HTML format. Hope it helps.

Hi! Because of TMT, I completely abandoned my favorite native FF. I do not need them anymore. Thanks to VisiboTech for this addon.

Just a question ... please, how to remove the TMT information bar that appears at the top of FF12.0 all times when browser startup. When I disable TMT extension, this bar does not appear and FF12.0 start normally. Otherwise, if I enable TMT extension, this bar appears and the browser hangs for several seconds at startup. This image will talk more...

I am able to create a custom bookmark for each row, but it appears to do nothing when I press the key combination. (Firefox 3.6.21 on MAC os 10.6) What are these shortcuts supposed to do? (I find this NOWHERE in TMT, nor on your site, nor on the web).
Please, -->how can I create a keyboard shortcut that will move a tab to the row I want, even if is not the currently active row? must I DRAG the tab to the inactive row I want, and that is the only "shortcut" TMT has? The double arrows on a tab send it to the active row ONLY, it appears -- am I limited to that (or I must repeatedly change which row is active, which is slower than just dragging them)? Where are instructions about these bookmarks?
I like the potential of TMT, but --as others have said--the instructions are both incomplete and unclear. Thanks, DSM

Visibo Team said...

@dsm The shortcuts in TMT options let you assign shortcuts to select specific rows. Please test the shortcuts as many combinations are used by the OS. To suspend a tab, just right click on the page and click "Send This Tab to TMT" and select the row. Hope it helps.

Hey there. I love TooManyTabs in conjunction with Pocket for Firefox, but one thing bugs me. Would you be able to add options to remove TooManyTabs from the right-click Context Menu, and to hide the List All Tabs button?
